Bellingham Makeup Artist: The things I've learned so far!
Almost 5 years ago, I made the decision to attend a makeup certification program in Newport beach California. With the support of my family and my super hot new boyfriend, I embarked on a journey that I thought would (at best) give me a little extra cash. Maybe it would even pay for itself, because dang, makeup is expensive! Taking makeup from a hobby to job was a huge step for me, but no one could have prepared me for the lessons I learned in the last few years. I thought I would take this opportunity to share a few!
Makeup artists have to read minds.
Or communicate really well with various personality types.
Working for yourself is the bomb digity.
You get paid to do what you love!!
Working for yourself also means saying “no”, because no one else will do it for you.
I hate disappointing people, so taking days off is hard when someone is asking about that date. I LOVE what I do, but if I didn’t take time for myself I would be a hot mess. No one wants to hang out with hot-mess-Liz.
My brides are the best people. Ever.
Also, STUNNING. Obviously.
Makeup will translate differently through the camera and editing process.
I will purposely do makeup differently if I know the photographers lighting/editing style leans dark and textured or light and airy.
I love marketing and business in general. Who knew?
There is a definite psychology to the makeup industry.
As a makeup artist, we are called upon to make someone feel extra amazing about themselves for a special (often once in a lifetime) day. Pretty only goes so far.
Networking. Networking. Networking.
My super hot (then boyfriend) husband is a saint.
He genuinely tries to listen and understand when I come home from a shoot and am bouncing up and down from excitement. Is he really interested in how a certian facial structure was so fun to play with? Or how amazing those freckles were? Nope. But he can fake it pretty well! So proud.
Are you toying with the idea of working for yourself?
DO IT. I will be your #1 cheerleader! It will be nothing like you think. It will be better.
